A gorgeous six and a half mile long barrier island, Folly Beach is home
for sun, sand, surfing, and southern hospitality. Formerly used
as a base for soldiers during the Civil War, Folly Beach is the
closest island to Historic Charleston. Folly Beach is known for
incredible waves, cool shops, historic and cultural sites;
Morris Island Lighthouse; mysterious sea turtles & endangered
birds; a maritime forest; and delicious gourmet food. Folly
Beach is filled with things to see do for families, adults and
retirees.
Restaurants
Is it good food you crave? You'll find a number of restaurants
near Center Street. There are no national chains like
Olive Garden, Outback, Friday's, etc. Almost all Folly
Beach restaurants are locally owned and operated, so you are
bound to find fresh caught local seafood anywhere you go.
Decor and atmosphere run a wide range. But don't let
appearances fool you. Often times the places that look
like they're ready to fall over have the best food. Here
are some of our favorite restaurants on Folly Beach:
-
Styrofoam plates & picnic tables
(Anchor Line Restaurant, Bowen's Island Restaurant)
-
Pub & tavern (Rolling Thunder
Roadhouse Cafe, Snapper Jacks)
-
Casual pizza or deli (The Pie
House, Dolphin Deli)
-
Casual family dining (Folly
Beach Crab Shack, Riptide in Holiday Inn)
-
Coffee & ice cream with
children's books & games (Folly's Brew & Ice Cream)
-
Stylish breakfast & lunch cafes
(Lost Dog Cafe, Cafe Suzanne)
-
Upscale gourmet (11 Center Wine
& Gourmet, River Cafe)
Beach & Water Activities
Another marvelous aspect of Folly Beach is all the things to
do at the ocean. There's exercise for the body and the
mind. We have vigorous sports like surfing, wind surfing,
kite boarding, kayaking and swimming. On the tamer side,
people here enjoy treasure hunting with metal detectors, pier
fishing, surf fishing, exploring and walking on the beach.
Boating here is huge - in all forms. Not only is there the
beach and ocean, but there are also harbors, tiny islands,
rivers, marshes and estuaries. Wildlife and bird watching around
Folly Beach is phenomenal!
Nightlife
Not exactly big city nightlife. You won't find a lot of
big dance clubs, raves or mixing DJs on
Folly Beach. But
you will find karaoke, sports bars, live music, pubs and
taverns. You may run into some local surfers or hippies
living it up, but nothing too wild. Nightlife on Folly
Beach echoes the laid back, beach loving culture of Folly
Island.
Folly Beach can fulfill your family oriented needs as well. Your
family can all enjoy seeing to the Morris Island Lighthouse,
located at the Charleston Harbor Entrance.
A short but pleasant walk over the
dunes at the end of Folly Beach is required to get to where the
lighthouse can be viewed. If its wildlife the children are more
interested in, keep a lookout for sea turtles that are sometimes
spotted on Folly Beach. The turtles usually crawl onto the beach
at Folly between May and September to lay eggs. However, there
are constant year round sightings of dolphins, fiddler crabs,
and various bird wildlife on Folly Beach.
Folly Beach is much more than a beach. The residents of Folly
refer to it as a "way of life." Whether you are in a bathing
suit or casual slacks the pace here is leisurely. Charming and forever
beautiful, Folly Beach is a great place to vacation or retire!
